Televangelist Pat Robertson Says Earthquake Result Of "Cursed" Haiti's Satanic Pact

Virginia Beach, VA, United States (AHN) - While delivering aid and assisting those injured and homeless in Haiti is on the minds of many Americans, Christian televangelist Pat Robertson used the tragedy to say the plight of those in the island is a result of them being "cursed" for signing a pact with the devil.

Robertson's comments were made on Wednesday during his CBN broadcast.

"Something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it," he said. "They were under the heel of the French ... and they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, 'We will serve you if you'll get us free from the French.' "True story. And the devil said, 'OK, it's a deal,'" Robertson said. "Ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after another."

The host of "The 700 Club" also said that Haitians need to have a "great turning to God."

Although Haiti was once occupied by the French, they left in 1825.

About 80 percent of Haitians are Roman Catholic, while about 16 percent are Protestant. According to CIA Factbook, about half of the population practices "voodoo."

Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive has said in published reports "well over" 100,000 people may have died in Tuesday's national disaster.

Those killed in the quake include Msgr. Joseph Serge Miot, 65, who was found in the rubble of the archdiocese. Reports indicate that hundreds of seminarians and priests are also trapped under toppled buildings.

Vicar General Benoit Seguiranno is also missing.

Robertson, who was once a Republican candidate for President, has also linked Hurricane Katrina and terrorist attacks to legalized abortion.
