Back in the 80s I was part of a collective which put out the anti-racist, anti-fascist magazine THE HAMMER. I am kind of proud of the job we did and the analysis which we put out there. We broke new ground. Eventually, as is so often the case, the differences within the collective sunk the project and we all went our own ways. Some wanted to become more of a monitoring and research group, others wanted to tend more to direct action. One of the founders, Leonard Zeskind, went on to become one of those "experts" which we see on TV whenever some outright fascist or nazi does something violent. He is also the author of the book "Blood and Politics: The History of the White Nationalist Movement from the Margins to the Mainstream." The rest of us went in other directions. I was opposed to the direction Leonard wanted to take us, strategically and tactically. I still have the same critique of his tactical orientation as I did then. However, having said that, I do respect the work he now does and I do respect his analysis. No one knows this shit better then he.
One of the questions of his outlook then that I still have now was how much emphasis to place on the fascist danger in the USA. I never deny that the danger exists, but I have always felt that the job white supremacy and the ideology of white skin privilege is doing in the USA actually overshadows the outright nazis who are most surely out there.
Still then and now I have always believed that it is important that someone or someones are keeping an eye on the white nationalist/nazi/fascist movement, and that whenever it rears its ugly head it must be confronted head on. It is for this reason that SCISSION certainly has always covered analytically that movement while also telling you about the activities of those who do directly take these people on.
It was during the time that back in the 80s (either while I was still with the Sojourner Truth Organization or helping to create THE HAMMER, can't remember exactly) I read THE TURNER DIARIES. The book was a work of fiction written by the then leader of the National Alliance, William Pierce under a pseudonym. At that time, the National Alliance pretty much was the ideological center, in our view, of the racialist fascist, more nazi like really, movement in the USA. We all (anti-fascists and fascists alike) saw the book as sort of a blue print for a biological determinist fascist movement in the USA. Leonard calls now what we were starting to see then, White Nationalism.
"The Turner Diaries tells the story of a white supremacist guerrilla army, the "Organization," that seeks to overthrow the American government as well as leading social institutions like the media and Hollywood -- known collectively as the "System." In the book's fictional foreword, an unknown narrator, speaking in a future Aryan republic that was formerly the United States, introduces the diaries of Earl Turner; Turner, the reader learns, was a soldier and martyr, a national folk hero, in the "Great Revolution" that overturned the System and began the "New Era." We are informed that his daily observations provide an inside account of the first two years of the Revolution, which began more than 100 years earlier, in the year 1991, and lasted eight years. (The foreword is dated "April 100," meaning 100 years into the New Era of Aryan rule, or 2099.)"
We used to associate with the British anti-fascist magazine SEARCHLIGHT back then. SEARCHLIGHT is still out there and I still read it. Today, on their website, I saw an article entitled "Gun Control in the U.S.: The "Cohen Act"? That immediately rang a bell, as the "Cohen Act" was what helped to kick off the the fascist, nazi like uprising of white revolutionary nationalist and their ilk in the Turner Diaries.
So I read the article.
Now I direct your attention to it.
I direct your attention to it for the obvious reason. You see, "The Cohen Act" in the Turner Diaries was a "law
