Protesters break into north Lebanon power plant

BEIRUT: A group of protesters fought their way into an Electricite du Liban power plant in north Lebanon early Monday, and attempted to force staff to restore power to areas affected by power cuts, EDL said in a statement.


The group of protesters arrived at the Deir Ammar power plant in Tripoli, north Lebanon, at around 1.15 a.m. and began hurling insults over the power cuts that had occurred throughout the night, EDL said.


After security guards at the station refused the protesters entry, they climbed the outer fence, and made their way into the plant “in an attempt to reach the power transfer grid and force members of staff on duty there to restore electricity to their areas,” the EDL said.


Their attempts were blocked by security personnel and the demonstrators were removed from the premises at around 2.30 a.m.


In its statement, EDL said the power cuts were a result of longer hours of maintenance required during the summer season as a result of the high temperatures and excessive loads on the power grid, and it urged citizens “to remain calm and avoid acts of sabotage as this would certainly not contribute to the improvement in power supply.”
