AFGHAN WOMEN AS SLAVE LABOR
Carpet Making
The carpet is one of the war-ravaged country's few exports
The sun rises and sets, weeks and months pass, and 12-year-old Shamta's bony fingers tie knot after knot to countless strings that will eventually mesh into a soft carpet.
"I start at dawn and stop by sunset - yes, it is hard work," Shamta says at her loom under a tarpaulin in one of the poorest areas of Kabul. But, she adds: "I am used to it."
The girl, who has never been to school, works with her 16-year-old sister, Fawzia, and two younger brothers on carpets that measure 24 square metres (80 square feet), each one taking about three months to finish.
She is one of thousands of Afghan girls and women who pass much of their lives working in often-squalid home-based "factories" to create the luxurious carpets that Afghanistan is famous for and adorn well-to-do homes across the world.
Many women from the ethnic Uzbek and Turkmen minorities in warlord-dominated northern Afghanistan work in small home-based "factories" to make the country's famous carpets, known for their quality and use of natural dyes.
Uzbeks make up six percent of Afghanistan's population of about 28 million and Turkmens about 2.5 percent.
According to a survey conducted by the Rabia Balkhi Advocacy and Skill building Agency (RASA), 113 out of the 300 interviewers had started weaving the carpets below the age of 10. Eight-year-old Moursal said she had been weaving carpets in her home in the Afghan capital Kabul, since she was six. “Weaving has destroyed the vision of my eyes. I am suffering from chest pain too,” Moursal complained.
The colourful carpets can fetch thousands of dollars, but they bring the women who weave them just enough to get by - along with a lot of hardship.
Exports
Human Rights activist Nilofar Sayar says, "It's fortunate that carpets can provide ... annual profit in Afghanistan. But have you ever thought of who is behind producing these carpets?"
She answers the question, "They're the unpaid slaves of their male relatives."
Carpet-weaving is an ancient tradition in Afghanistan and the Afghan carpet is one of the war-ravaged country's few exports. For Shamta's family of 12, it is their only income.
"We earn some 15,000 to 20,000 Afghanis ($300 to $400) a month. It is not enough," says Shamta's father, Waheedu Allah.
Waheedu Allah taught his children the skill that was passed on to him by his own father. The family is employed by a dealer to make the carpets, which can each fetch about $3000.
Shamta admits the job of tying tiny knots has taken a toll on her young body. "My eyes sometimes itch," she says. "My spine also hurts."
Unpaid slaves
The plight of Shamta and thousands of others like her has alarmed rights activist Nilofar Sayar, who this year spent months with about 300 carpet-weavers in northern Afghanistan, the country's main carpet-producing area.
"They are the unpaid slaves of their male relatives," she says in a booklet on her findings released last week.
"It is fortunate that carpets can provide businessmen annual profit in Afghanistan but have you ever thought of who is behind producing these carpets?" Sayar asks.
The women and girls, some as young as 11, spend up to 18 hours at work in "dusty, dark and wet rooms", she says. The conditions often lead to tuberculosis.
The minute and dusty work often causes eye problems among the weavers, while constant contact with dyes and wool can cause skin reactions. Their legs, backs and shoulders are strained by hours of sitting in the same position, often on the floor.
"They suffer from diseases but are still weaving carpets - they're being used as machines by their husbands but no one cares about them," Sayar says.
Opium relief
To cope, and to keep their babies still while they are at work, many women resort to taking opium which is easy to come by in Afghanistan, the world's biggest supplier of the drug.
Sayar's report quotes a carpet weaver saying: "I have to give opium [to my baby]. If I do not, who would weave carpets?"
"If a girl wants to weave carpets and wants not to be tired, she would use a little opium," the woman adds.
The carpet weavers are often prevented from going to school by their families, or are poor students because they have no time to spend on their studies, according to Sayar's research.
Calls For Relief
While calling on the government to enforce standards on maximum working hours, Sayar said, “They’re the unpaid slaves of their male relatives," adding many of the women weaving carpets do not know the value of the carpets they make.
"The weavers suffer from eye and leg problems. They suffer from tuberculosis," she said, adding they should be provided with health clinics and schools.
Illiteracy was another problem among the women interviewed by RASA. Some 265 out of 300 were illiterate. Only 35 of them had had primary education, according to the survey.
Sayar, who works for the non-governmental group RBMSSI, called on the US-backed government of President Hamid Karzai to end the "misery of Afghan women". Sources: AFP, RAWA, Aljazeera, IRIN

NEW ORLEANS NOW
Well, friends it is one of those Friday where all you get is a reprint from another source. The following is from the San Francisco Bay View
New Orleans Now: Bay Area volunteers share shocking stories
by CC Campbell-Rock
The flicker of the changing images held the packed warehouse community co-op audience spellbound. At least 70 people, mostly white social justice activists, turned out to watch the New Orleans update from the Common Ground Collective’s Video Committee. The new video is a compendium of footage and images from at least seven Bay Area volunteers who took part in the organization’s rebuilding New Orleans campaign.
The new footage captured the views of social justice activists, New Orleanians and Bay Area volunteers who participated in the Thanksgiving weekend’s “Roadtrip for Relief,” called for by the organizers of the Common Ground Collective.
The film paled in comparison to the stories of at least 10 volunteers who put their lives on hold and answered Common Ground Collective’s call for 300 people to come and work to rebuild New Orleans. They told stories of a New Orleans that existed before Hurricane Katrina. Their accounts exposed the dirty little secrets that the popular Southern city has harbored for centuries.
“The Common Ground Collective called for a national caravan to converge in New Orleans and for 300 people to meet down there to do all kinds of work, to support people in New Orleans,” said Natasha Dedrick, a core organizer of the Common Ground Collective.
Dedrick coordinated the road trip and the recent meeting. “We’re proud to say that we had the largest contingency. At least 50 Bay Area residents accepted the challenge of helping hurricane victims.
Essentially, Hurricane Katrina unmasked the realities that the majority of city residents experienced on a daily basis: virulent, insidious forms of racism, repression and corruption, which trapped generations of New Orleanians in the cycle of poverty, on which mainstream media reported, initially.
In three short days, Dedrick, who pulled together a cross-section of volunteers, helped to raise $5,000 for the Common Ground Collective. She borrowed a truck, filled it up with cleaning supplies and was joined by at least 50 others on the trip.
She got involved after hearing news reports on the hurricane’s devastation. “I started freaking out, once I saw the response to it. I called Malik (Rahim, co-founder of Common Ground) and Families and Friends of Louisiana’s Incarcerated Children. I couldn’t reach anyone. My friends said, ‘Just go down there.’”
Not only did she go for the road trip, but Dedrick has been to New Orleans at least three times since the hurricane ravaged the city and the Gulf Coast. “It’s (destruction) going on for miles and miles,” the activist affirmed.
“The interesting thing about going down is that there’s almost nothing happening on the ground, except what the grassroots is doing. The Common Ground Collective is about the only group on the ground doing anything. There are almost no city workers. When I see them, they look like little ants on a mountain of destruction. The National Guard is roaming the streets in humvees. They drive by and you want to say, ‘Get out and start working.’”
Perplexed by the useless activities of the National Guard, Dedrick, who is volunteering in honor of her mother, an activist and artist who passed away five years ago, asked a national guardsman about his work. She was told the National Guard was in the fourth phase of a national recovery program.
“The first, second, third and fourth stages are patrolling. They’re patrolling what? It’s a ghost town. The fifth phase is the clean up, which will start in January. But then, that will only be done by the Louisiana National Guard. The other units are pulling out. We (Common Ground Collective) were able to do 30 houses and give out food. It was a lot, but that’s nothing,” compared to the work that remains.
“I couldn’t be more disgusted,” she adds, about the hidden agenda of some involved in the reclamation of the city. “There’s no mistake. It is ethnic cleansing … just the fact there is no electricity. What is that? No schools. No electricity and hot water. How much work is down there? An endless amount of work, and residents can’t get jobs. Where are the jobs?”
Justin Hite, another core organizer with the Common Ground Collective, told the story of the arrest of Brandon Darby, the Ninth Ward coordinator for Common Ground Collective. “Brandon was on his way to get King (one of the Angola 3), who was stranded in his home, shortly after the hurricane. A ranger came along and made Brandon get into a boat. He jumped off the boat and began swimming. The cops were in pursuit. Things were getting rough, until the media showed up. Then the rangers dispatched a boat to get King.”
Justin and several other volunteers also had to take turns on watch for anyone who wanted to destroy or damage the reputation of the Common Ground Collective and its leader, Malik Rahim. “At dusk, white militias formed up and would patrol, with machine guns, the Black communities looking for looters.”
Hite said they started the Common Ground Collective by posting 7,000-8,000 fliers on doors. The owner of a daycare center donated her building for free for three months. The collective today uses the location as a distribution center. More recently, the group launched a women’s center across the street from the distribution outlet.
Nicole Derse, a political organizer, said she was surprised at the response from government. She went to Thailand after the tsunami, where she helped to set up the Tsunami Volunteer Center. She also went down to New Orleans to help the Katrina victims. The way the Thailand government handed that country’s natural disaster compared with the Bush administration’ handling of the U.S.’s greatest natural disaster stunned her.
“I was shocked that the government wasn’t even trying to pretend to help. The Thailand government did what it could (after the tsunami), as small as it is, but the local, state and federal governments here do not want people to return. They do not want New Orleans to be a predominately Black city any longer,” Derse explained.
Most shocking to Derse, is that the cost to rent a home or apartment in New Orleans has tripled. “A two-bedroom will now go for $2,500 per month,” when it previously cost $800 per month. Moreover, developers are offering homeowners pennies on the dollar to purchase their property. “All the evidence suggests that this is the greatest example of racism and peril of capitalism I’ve ever seen in my lifetime,” she says.
Emma Gerard, a tenant organizer, said the Housing Authority of New Orleans is telling public housing tenants that there is no place for them to live if they come back. “There has been a governmental moratorium on evictions since Oct. 29, but since then, 100 people per day are being evicted. I personally witnessed a woman’s belongings being pushed out.”
Most egregious, she adds, is the behavior of the Housing Authority of New Orleans. “There is a push to shut down the projects and to reduce Section 8 tenants,” Gerard explains.
Tenants at the B.W. Cooper public housing development were told that they couldn’t return to Cooper because of “extensive damage” done by the hurricane. “Sam Jackson took us on a tour of his apartment and there was no damage there. Tenants have found out that HANO is using their homes to house relief workers and HANO staff members,” says Gerard.
Conversely, FEMA has been giving out Section 8 vouchers, but landlords are refusing to take them. They would rather rent to higher paying government workers and contractors, Gerard concludes.
Derse added, “It’s easy to get evicted in New Orleans. There is a five-day eviction notice. If you don’t show up for a hearing, the landlord has a right to put your stuff out on the street.”
Common Ground Collective is working in tandem with No Heat on an anti-eviction campaign. As a result of the recent lawsuit, landlords have to send eviction notices to the last registered addresses of the tenants and FEMA has to give the City of New Orleans a list of tenants to be evicted.
Several prison activists went to New Orleans to monitor and report on the prison system and to monitor police activities. Aaron and Genca visited the House of Detention, a holding jail, and saw MPs patrolling with assault rifles. The activists were not allowed to enter the courtroom.
They were able, however, to pass out 50-100 legal rights handbooks. Aaron shared instances of frivolous arrests of people in New Orleans. “Mostly for things that sound like slave code violations, like double-parking,” he said.
One organizer, Jimmy, was arrested for double-parking while trying to off-load supplies. “They were always arresting Black people for nothing,” he continued. Another was arrested for littering on Halloween night.
“The state of the prison isn’t fit for anyone to be in there. They just threw a bunch of bleach on the mold. There is no running water. The toilets are overflowing. They’re arresting people and putting them in jail, where they are getting sick. People are in a state where they need trauma relief, as well as getting back into their homes,” Genca added.
Aaron added, “I also heard several stories about how fines have dramatically increased since before Katrina. They were saying that since the city was nearly broke, they needed to increase fines.” For example, a fine that was $50 before Katrina shot up to $250.
“Only one public defender is back. He is recommending that people plead guilty and pay the fines, so you don’t have to spend the night in Parish Prison.”
Aaron then told the story of two Mexican-Americans and their father who left Texas to do demolition work in Plaquemines Parish. Anyone who lives in Louisiana knows that Plaquemines Parish was legendary as a bastion of racism, as exhibited by the late Parish President Leander Perez.
They two workers were called “wetbacks” by the parish’s police, and one family member was arrested and charged with being an illegal alien, even though he was American born. Bail was set at $10,000 and the trial for February 2006.
“When the family brought the money for bail, they were given a series of clearly racist things as excuses for holding their brother in jail. For example, they said the INS had a hold on his record, he had a fake ID etc.,” Aaron said.
They sent the family to Orleans Parish to the INS, which said there was no hold on this person, and they were sent back to Plaquemines. While there, a Plaquemines clerk gave them the INS phone number for work permits for their brother, who was born in the U.S.
“They were given 30 different phone numbers. That was a totally racist system being used. Another person held with him is still in jail. There have been 1,200 arrests since the hurricane. The ACLU is collecting stories like that to mount a legal challenge in court.”
Aaron also says, “If people want to go back, this is the time. Both the white conservatives and the white liberals are going in to do their thing,” he continued, “but no one is listing to Black people. And the other community organizations and clinics are not trying to help out.”
Lisa Milos went to New Orleans to work with Common Ground also. She’s interested in establishing a nationwide effort similar to Freedom Summer in the 1960s, when young people took a leadership role in the civil rights movement.
“I would like to see young people in the grassroots go down and rebuild and shame the government into redirecting the money away from Blackwater Security and Halliburton,” she explained.
Milos spoke of incidents of wage disparities that she witnessed. “One woman, a Bobcat operator, was offered $10 per hour one week, when others were being paid $15 an hour. Blacks and Latinos were making $10-$12 per hour.
“Then there is this incredible Guatemalan, whose employer asked him to pay $1,000 in rent to share a spare room. They are trying not to hire residents, especially if they are Black or Latino,” Milos said of major contractors in New Orleans.
“I’m just an uneducated forklift operator,” another participant said. “But I went down to help when I heard Malik call for help on the radio. He said, ‘You don’t have to have a college degree.’
“They need bodies there to do the work. If you can push a broom, please go down and help.”
“We gutted 30 houses, but there is 93 miles of destruction. We’re building a new solidarity movement like in the ‘60s. It’s a historic slap in the face of Black and poor people that the government has turned its back on them.
“We want our solidarity to transform institutions, to transform the way society runs, the way we live. Common Ground is calling for another convergence in January, but people are welcome any time,” Natasha Dedrick said.

AND A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL
Ann Coulter, whose right wing rants almost defy description, was heckled into stopping her speech at the University of Connecticut yesterday.
Coulter appearances are really more of a circus act than anything else. She is so bizarre one would think she can’t possibly be serious about anything she says.
Unfortunately these days, who knows.
Coulter's appearance prompted protests from several groups, including Students Against Hate and the Puerto Rican/Latin American Cultural Center. They criticized her for spreading a message of hate and intolerance.
Eric Knudsen, a 19-year-old sophomore journalism and social welfare major at UConn, didn't attend the speech. "We encourage diverse opinion at UConn, but this is blatant hate speech," said Knudsen, head of Students Against Hate.
Jorge Cruz, a 5th-semester psychology major said, "I can't believe we paid to support racism. She produces hate-crime."
Queers United Against Discrimination (QUAD), the Puerto Rican/Latin American Cultural Center, the Rainbow Center and Students Against Hate sponsored an alternative event to Coulter’s night club act.
"Mainly our goal was to throw this counter Coulter event," said Samantha Harrigan, a 3rd-semester pre-communications major and a member of the organization.
"We're really trying to deter people from going," Harrigan said as students handed out fliers instructing people to walk out of the Coulter speech at 7:45 p.m.
The alternative event included speakers from the UConn community sharing their experiences with discrimination and hate, even in today's society.
The message of alumni and current UConn students was not to be anti-Republican or anti-religion. Chris Albert, a graduate student, is a Christian and a marine. He feels that people like Coulter threaten the three most important things to him - God, his country and his family. He feels Coulter's opinions are an example of "false patriotism."

WASHINGTON ACCUSED OF HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS AT GLOBAL WARMING CONFERENCE
Pointing out that rising seas and more frequent and severe storms are threatening the livelihoods of indigenous groups in the Arctic and small tropical island states, Sheila Watt-Cloutier, chair of the Inuit Circumpolar Conference, stated at the launch of a project Tuesday to help Arctic communities and mostly Pacific island states adapt to climate change, "These are the two most vulnerable regions to climate change.”
She said evidence of a warming planet was stark and compelling and the cultures of the Arctic and island nations were at risk, adding that promoting adaptation was urgent. "As we melt, the small developing island states sink," she told a news conference in Montreal, where about 190 nations are meeting to try to find ways to curb the emission of greenhouse gases released from burning fossil fuels.
In many Pacific island states, rising sea levels are causing chaos, said Taito Nakalevu of the South Pacific Regional Environment Programme, an organization established by Pacific governments. "Climate change has an impact on almost all aspects of our lives," he said. "Most of our rural communities are still very dependent on natural resources, such as fisheries, agriculture and forestry. But because of climate change, these resources are becoming scarce."
In the low-lying Pacific state of Tuvalu, a cluster of atolls no more than 16.5 feet above sea level, so-called king tides are becoming unusually powerful, swamping large areas, causing beach erosion, flooding of crops and homes.
In some areas, rising salinity has meant crops can no longer be grown, Nakalevu said. King tides are often whipped up by cyclones.
“The problem now was how to protect people's livelihoods and cultures. Some would be forced to move to other islands, while others would have to adapt,” he added. “ If they can't, some cultures could be wiped out. “
In the arctic, the situation is no better.
"Climate change is destroying our environment and eroding our culture," Watt-Cloutier said on the sidelines of a 189-nation meeting in Montreal, Canada, on ways to fight global warming.
Inuit indigenous peoples formally accused Washington on Wednesday of violating their human rights by failing to do enough to fight a thaw of Arctic ice undermining their hunting culture.
In a groundbreaking case, the Inuit Circumpolar Conference, which represents about 155,000 people in Alaska, Canada, Greenland and Russia, filed a petition to a commission of the Organization of American States that said climate change was tantamount to human rights abuse. (See Press Release Below)
Environmentalists said the petition broke new ground as a cross-border attempt to address climate change. Some Pacific island states, threatened by rising seas, have threatened lawsuits against the United States. Lawyers say such a case would be extremely costly and very hard to win.

Inuit Petition Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to Oppose Climate Change Caused by the United States of America
MONTREAL - Ms. Sheila Watt-Cloutier, the elected Chair of the Inuit Circumpolar Conference (ICC), today submitted a petition to the Washington DC-based Inter-American Commission on Human Rights seeking relief from violations of the human rights of Inuit resulting from global warming caused by greenhouse gas emissions from the United States of America. The Commission, which was created in 1959 by the Organization of American States, has a long and distinguished history of protecting human rights, particularly those of indigenous peoples.).
Ms. Watt-Cloutier spoke at a side event at the 11th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. She was joined by Dr. Robert Corell, Chair of the recently completed Arctic Climate Impact Assessment (ACIA), Dr. James Anaya, an aboriginal human rights lawyer at the University of Arizona, and Mr. Carlos Manuel Rodriguez, Minister of Environment and Energy of the Government of Costa Rica.
Drawing upon the traditional knowledge of hunters and elders and wide-ranging peer reviewed science, the 163-page petition is supported by testimony from 63 named Inuit from northern Canada and Alaska. The petition documents existing, ongoing, and projected destruction of the Arctic environment and the culture and hunting-based economy of Inuit caused by global warming.
The November 2004 ACIA (available at www.acia.uaf.edu) prepared over a four-year period by more than 300 scientists from 15 countries and six Indigenous peoples organizations concluded:
The Arctic is extremely vulnerable to observed and projected climate change and its impacts. The Arctic is now experiencing some of the most rapid and severe climate change on earth. Over the next 100 years, climate change is expected to accelerate, contributing to major physical, ecological, social and economic changes, many of which have already begun. Changes in arctic climate will also affect the rest of the world through increased global warming and rising sea levels.
Dr. Corell stressed two key conclusions of the ACIA, “Marine species dependent on sea ice, including polar bears, ice-living seals, walrus, and some marine birds are very likely to decline, with some species facing extinction; and
“For Inuit, warming is likely to disrupt or even destroy their hunting and food-sharing culture as reduced sea ice causes the animals on which they depend to decline, become less accessible, and possibly become extinct.”
Ms. Watt-Cloutier said, “Inuit are an ancient people. Our way of life is dependent on the natural environment and animals. Climate change is destroying our environment and eroding our culture. But we refuse to disappear. We will not become a footnote to globalization.
“Climate change is amplified in the Arctic. What is happening to us now will happen soon in the rest of the world. Our region is the globe’s climate change “barometer.” If you want to protect the planet, look to the Arctic and listen to what Inuit are saying.”
The petition focuses on the United States of America because it is by far the largest emitter of greenhouse gases and it refuses to join the international effort to reduce emissions. The petition asks the Commission to hold hearings in northern Canada and Alaska to investigate the harm caused to Inuit by global warming. Specifically, the petition asks the Commission to declare the United States of America in violation of rights affirmed in the 1948 American Declaration of the Rights and Duties of Man and other instruments of international law.
The petition urges the commission to recommend that the United States adopt mandatory limits to its emissions of greenhouse gases and co-operate with the community of nations to “prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system,” the objective of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. As well, the petition requests the Commission declare that the United States of America has an obligation to work with Inuit to develop a plan to help Inuit adapt to unavoidable impacts of climate change, and to take into account the impact of its emissions on the Arctic and Inuit before approving all major government actions.
Dr. Anaya said, “The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights has previously addressed human rights cases submitted by Indigenous peoples seeking to protect their environment and ways of life. The Inuit petition is an opportunity for the Commission to make a significant contribution to the further evolution of international human rights law.”
In conclusion, Ms. Watt-Cloutier said, “This petition is not about money, it is about encouraging the United States of America to join the world community to agree to deep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions needed to protect the Arctic environment and Inuit culture and, ultimately, the world. We submit this petition not in a spirit of confrontation—that is not the Inuit way—but as a means of inviting and promoting dialogue with the United States of America within the context of the climate change convention. Our purpose is to educate not criticize, and to inform not condemn. I invite the United States of America to respond positively to our petition. As well, I invite governments and non-governmental organizations worldwide to support our petition and to never forget that, ultimately, climate change is a matter of human rights.” Sources: the Inuit Circumpolar Conference, San Diego Union Tribune, TVNZ (New Zealand)
CASE COLLAPSES: "THERE NEVER WAS A SINN FEIN SPY RING OPERATING FROM STORMONT"
Three Belfast men who were supposedly at the center of the spy ring have been acquitted of all charges. The men, whose arrests led to the collapse of the power-sharing executive, claimed the case against them had been politically motivated. The three were arrested following a police raid, done in the glare of the media, on Sinn Féin's offices at Stormont on 5 October 2002, when documents and computer discs were seized.
The accusations plunged Northern Ireland’s power-sharing institutions into crisis, with the Rev Ian Paisley’s Democratic Unionists and the Ulster Unionists, led at that time by then First Minister David Trimble, threatened to collapse the executive with resignations.
The British government suspended devolution, embarking on three years of direct rule.
Following the decision at Belfast Crown Court to drop charges against Sinn Fein’s head of administration Denis Donaldson, his son-in-law Ciaran Kearney and civil servant William Mackessy, Sinn Fein’s chief negotiator Martin McGuinness said the allegation of a spy ring was concocted in 2002 to destroy political progress at Stormont.
McGuinness said “There never was a Sinn Féin spy ring operating from Stormont. This was a carefully constructed lie created by the Special Branch in order to cause maximum political impact. Its effect politically has been to collapse the institutions and personally it has damaged the lives of the four people originally charged and their families. This operation is as blatant an example of political policing as you are likely to find.’
Said McGuinness, “Sinn Féin said very clearly at the time that eventually this case would fall apart. There was no evidence to sustain it. However that was not the motivation of those responsible for carrying out this operation. Their motivation was to collapse the political institutions and stall further progress on policing change including of course the transfer of power to locally elected and accountable politicians.’
“The effect of this operation," he said, "was to stop the work of the Executive in its tracks. At the time as Minister of Education I was involved in important work including the autism centre planned for Middletown and the review of post primary education.’
He added, “At a policing level very serious questions now need to be addressed by the British government and the PSNI. At a political level those who eagerly used this operation to walk away from the political institutions need to reflect long and hard on their position."
In a dramatic development, prosecutors told Belfast Crown Court during an unlisted case that no further evidence would be put forward and the prosecution was no longer in the public interest.
Justice Harte said a verdict of not guilty had to be returned and he told the men they were now free.
A statement from the Police Services of Northern Ireland (PSNI) reported in the Belfast Telegraph noted, "That police investigation has concluded. There are no further lines of enquiry and no individuals are being sought by the police."
Ciaran Shiels, of the Madden and Finucane law firm which represented Donaldson and Mackessy, told UTV both men believed they were the victims of a political operation by elements within the security forces in Northern Ireland opposed to political progress.
"Since October 2002 our clients have had extremely serious charges hanging over them," Shiels said.
"Both of them have vehemently denied the allegations against them."
Shiels added, "Their arrests had not only serious consequences for themselves and their families, but also for the wider community, in the sense that their arrests led to the fall of the power-sharing executive at Stormont."
"Our clients are of the clear view that they were victims of a political operation by elements within the security forces who deliberately used their position to hamper political progress in this country." Sources: UTV, Belfast Telegraph, Ireland On Line, Sinn Fein News
